Webelos Day Outing & Planning Lock-In
October 24, 2013 & October 24-25, 2013 ** Slight Date Change **

Get ready to show Webelos what Troop 4 is like! The annual Webelos Day Outing will be October 24, 2013.

Followed by the Planning Lock-In! The suggestion box will be out at troop meetings starting at the end of August. What do you want to do next year? (Parents, you’re welcome to offer suggestions too.)

Planning Lock-In
October 24-25, 2013

We’re getting ready to plan the 2014 calendar. Have ideas of what the troop should do next year? Is there are REALLY GREAT outing you think we should go on? The suggestion box is out. Put your suggestions in for consideration. Any can put in an idea.

Fall Fundraiser
September 21 - October 15, 2013

Parent Meeting: September 17, 2013 -- find out information about how the sale’s going to be run, when things need to be turned in, when things can get picked up. We’re changing things up just a little to make things easier. Every parent is encouraged to attend.

The sale starts Saturday, September 21. Materials will be handed out at the September 17 troop meeting. You cannot start selling until the start date. Everything needs to be returned to the troop by October 15.

A Scout is Thrifty. During the fundraiser you can earn enough to cover ALL your outings for 2014 -- including summer camp! Your commission is 40%!

There will be a show & sell at St. John Neumann. Watch for sign-up times.

Creep-o-Ree

Time: Arrive at ETC at 4 pm November 1; Return to ETC November 3 around 1 pm

December Cabin Camp
December 6-8, 2013

We have the Rotary Cabin at Camp Long Lake the weekend of December 6-8. Permission slips are available.

Time: Meet at ETC at 4:30, Friday December 6; leaving at 5 pm. Returning to ETC Sunday, December 8 in the early afternoon.

Cost: $20

There will be INDOOR and OUTDOOR activities. If there is snow, sledding is possible but you must bring a sled and a helmet. An extra pair of shoes and extra socks are always a plus at this outing.

Recharter

It’s almost that time again! Recharter packets will be available at the November 12 Troop Meeting. Please turn them back in as soon as possible.

Dues are increasing this year to $45 for the year because BSA National raised their dues. Most of the troop dues go to National to pay for registration fees.

Adult Leaders: Please go on-line and look at your training. Youth Protection Training is required to be taken every two years. If yours expires before January 31, 2014... Please retake before January 1st!

A Note about Advancement & Service Hours

If your son does service outside of the troop, we will count it! A note about the dates, amount, a brief description and SIGNED by an adult (parent or leader of the service activity) need to be turned in. We cannot count hours that are just written (or added) to the back of the advancement sheets.

Advancement Requirements: there are only a couple that a parent can sign off on (such as Second Class #10). Otherwise, older scouts will teach and test their skills with a scoutmaster signing off. For First Class #5, a note signed by the person they talked to gets them credit.

A Note About Merit Badges & Blue Cards

As a reminder, it is a scouts responsibility to sign up for merit badges. This includes finding clinics or calling merit badge counselors and taking out and getting blue cards signed.

Occasionally the troop will announce merit badge opportunities or facilitate registration, but it is still the scouts responsibility to see that he has done the pre-requirements, has all the materials for the clinic, and taken out a blue card.

October’s Quiz

  1. What was the very first toy advertised in the U.S. on national television?
  2. What gadget did flamboyant Kansas City Athletics owner Charlie Finley briefly use to deliver new baseballs to umpires?
  3. What is the difference between a meteoroid, a meteor, and a meteorite?

September’s Answers: 1) Oregon, in 1887. 2) Habitat for Humanity. 3) In Tahiti where natives attached woven palm fronds to their feet to propel them through the water.
