July 14 SJN Service Meeting
July 14, 2020

As is our tradition, the first troop meeting after Summer Camp is a service meeting at St. John Neumann. We’ll be doing outdoor grounds maintenance (pulling weeds, trimming back bushes and prayer trail maintenance).

Bring: work gloves, hedge clippers, yard rakes, bug spray, and masks. Reminder: only adults may use power tools - but they are welcome to bring weed-eaters.

July Court of Honor
Date: To Be Announced

We’re working on our July Court of Honor where we will recognize all the merit badges and advancement the troops have done since January -- especially over summer camp! This year, we’re going to be doing things a little differently: rather than a picnic meal, we’ll be having ice cream and frozen treats.

Watch for more information to follow.

July, August, & September Outings

We’re in the process of working out what to do for the next few months’ outings. Some things are up-in-the-air: Webelos Jamoree isn’t yet on the Council calendar. Others events like the Bristol RenFaire have been cancelled by their organizers.

Watch for more information about upcoming outing opportunities.

In-Person Troop Meetings

We’re going to continue meeting in-person as troops but continue to do so responsibly. Both units will be following simple guidelines addressed in Mrs. Danner’s May 31st email. Continuing for July: Troop 4B will continue to meet at ETC. Troop 4G will be meeting in Oconomowoc at Mrs. Tahtinen’s house.

Things to remember:

  1. Monitor your personal and family health. Before every meeting: that your scout or family hasn’t had a fever in the last 2 weeks, hasn’t been sick in the last 2 weeks, and currently have no fever.
  2. Temperatures will be scanned before entering meeting space.
  3. Continue good hand washing / sanitizing practices - with additional washing / sanitizing as activities require.
  4. Wear a cloth mask or face covering: whenever inside a building or when within 6 feet of another person.
  5. Disinfect surfaces after each meeting.

The troop leadership will continue to monitor the situation, feedback from parents, and recommendations of health officials.

Medical Form Update

At the beginning of the year, National came out with an updated Class A/B/C medical forms. The new forms are available linked on the troop website. Medical forms of the old format (dated prior to 1/1/20) will still be valid until their expiration date (the end of the month 1 year after the date they were signed) but any new forms need to be on the updated form.

As you are getting your physicals (for well-checks or sports), please download the new forms to take with you to be signed.

Troop Elections

OA elections were held virtually during May. Call-outs will happen during summer camp for those that were elected.

4G held their Spring elections in May for a short term. Both 4B & 4G will have their next troop elections at the end of September with terms starting October 1.

Got Advancement?

Looking to have requirements signed off? Remember, it’s up to you to seek out a scout First Class or Above to test and sign off on your requirements. Once they’ve dated and initialed your advancement sheet, drop it in the box and it will get recorded in Scoutbook. Not in the box or without the initials of whoever signed it off? It doesn’t get recorded.

What about Merit Badges? Once you decide you want to work on a badge, fill out a Blue Card and take it to Mr. Landquist or Mrs. Tahtinen to sign off. They’ll also help you find merit badge counselors. Having issues contacting a counselor? Let Mr. Landquist or Mrs. Tahtinen know so he can help find another counselor.

July’s Quiz

  1. If you were standing on Mars watching the sunset, what color would the sky around the sun appear?
  2. Where did the final battle of the Revolutionary War take place?
  3. What tiny and unusual museum is housed in the back rooms of the Holy Trinity Church in Dalston, London?

June’s Answers: 1) June 1, 1937. She was declared lost at sea on July 17, 1937. 2) The organization officially came into existence in October 1945. 3) Georgia.
