August, & September Outings

Each month seems to be a bit of a cross-your-fingers about outings. The August outing has fallen apart, watch for information for other activities -- and we encourage all Arrowmen (those in the Order of the Arrow) to attend the fall conference August 14-16. Webelos Jamoree as well as Devil’s Lake have been cancelled.

Moving into the fall: There are Swamp Fox Service outings for both 4B and 4G and we are watching for information from the Council about the Fall Merit Badge Camporee and Creep-o-Ree but expect those to be going forward.

Watch for more information about upcoming outing opportunities.

Swamp Fox Service Outings
4G: September 25-27 | 4B: October 2-4

This is both an opportunity to camp (something we’ve missed this summer) and to give service to the Cub Scouts! Spend the weekend as the service troop at Swamp Fox.

Permission slips are available (4G - September) (4B - October). Cost: $5/person

Fall Merit Badge Camporee
October 9-11, 2020

The Council is working on determining the merit badges offered and we’re waiting for the information! Spend a weekend working on merit badges and having a fun camping weekend. Save the date!

Creep-o-Ree
November 6-8, 2020

Save the Date! Creep-o-Ree (traditionally our last tent camping weekend of the year) will be November 6-8, 2020. We’re waiting on more information from the council so keep your eyes out for the permission slips.

In-Person Troop Meetings

We’re going to continue meeting in-person as troops but continue to do so responsibly. Both units will be following simple guidelines addressed in Mrs. Danner’s May 31st email. Continuing for August: Troop 4B will continue to meet at ETC. Troop 4G will be meeting in Oconomowoc at Mrs. Tahtinen’s house.

Things to remember:

  1. Monitor your personal and family health. Before every meeting: that your scout or family hasn’t had a fever in the last 2 weeks, hasn’t been sick in the last 2 weeks, and currently have no fever.
  2. Temperatures will be scanned before entering meeting space.
  3. Continue good hand washing / sanitizing practices - with additional washing / sanitizing as activities require.
  4. Wear a cloth mask or face covering: whenever inside a building or when within 6 feet of another person.
  5. Disinfect surfaces after each meeting.

The troop leadership will continue to monitor the situation, feedback from parents, and recommendations of health officials.

Medical Form Update

At the beginning of the year, National came out with an updated Class A/B/C medical forms. The new forms are available linked on the troop website. Medical forms of the old format (dated prior to 1/1/20) will still be valid until their expiration date (the end of the month 1 year after the date they were signed) but any new forms need to be on the updated form.

As you are getting your physicals (for well-checks or sports), please download the new forms to take with you to be signed.

Troop Elections

OA elections were held virtually during May. Call-outs will happen during summer camp for those that were elected.

4G held their Spring elections in May for a short term. Both 4B & 4G will have their next troop elections at the end of September with terms starting October 1.

Got Advancement?

Looking to have requirements signed off? Remember, it’s up to you to seek out a scout First Class or Above to test and sign off on your requirements. Once they’ve dated and initialed your advancement sheet, drop it in the box and it will get recorded in Scoutbook. Not in the box or without the initials of whoever signed it off? It doesn’t get recorded.

What about Merit Badges? Once you decide you want to work on a badge, fill out a Blue Card and take it to Mr. Landquist or Mrs. Tahtinen to sign off. They’ll also help you find merit badge counselors. Having issues contacting a counselor? Let Mr. Landquist or Mrs. Tahtinen know so he can help find another counselor.

August’s Quiz

  1. What is the name of both an instrument for drawing circles and a navigational device?
  2. Where did Toru Iwatani, the creator of Pac-Man, get his inspiration for the shape of the iconic video game character?
  3. Linguine is a kind of narrow, flat pasta. What does the world linguine literally mean in Italian?

July’s Answers: 1) Blue. 2) Yorktown, Virginia. 3) The Clowns’ Gallery and Museum.
