October Webelos Day
October 27, 2011

We’ll be taking Webelos to Lapham Peak at the end of October. Start thinking about what type of FUN activities you can do with them... This is our chance to sell the troop to the Webelos!

Permission slips are out. They are due back by October 25!

Meet at ETC at 8 am, we’ll head to Lapham Peak at 8:20 am. We’ll return to ETC around 4:30 pm.

Cost is $4 per scout.

October Planning Lock-In
October 27-28, 2011

Oh no! Our calendar’s almost done! We need to plan activities for 2012! The suggestion box will be back out at Troop Meetings. Drop you’re ideas for outings and activities into the box. New this year: with the Journey to Excellence Quality Award, we’re going to need at least four (4) service projects... But more is better. Have ideas? Drop them in.

Permissions slips are out.

Come to ETC at 4:30 pm. We’ll cook the employees breakfast Friday morning and you can be picked up at 9 am.

Cost: $2 (FREE if you also attend the Webelos Day Outing!)

Birthdays

Troop Elections

Troop elections will be held in September! Start thinking about what position you would like. Star and Life scouts... What leadership will you have held that you can tell your Eagle Board about? Tenderfoot, Second Class, First Class scouts... Have some snazzy ideas for how your patrol can run? What about how the troop should run?

Be prepared to give a short blurb about why you are right for the position you want!

Youth Protection

It’s not just the adults that need to go through Youth Protection training. We’ll be showing the second half of the video “A Time to Tell” during September. The sections left deal with more difficult abusive situations your scout could find themselves in.

Parents are more than welcome to preview the video. You are also encouraged to stay for the meeting that night.

Adult Coordinators Needed

There are still a few outings that do not have adult coordinators. What’s the job of the adult coordinator? To help the scout that’s coordinating the outing: offering suggestions for campgrounds, keeping on-top of the scout to make sure tasks are done, making reservations since most places will not accept a youth doing so.

Life to Eagle
October 8, 2011

There will be 2 Life-to-Eagle Workshops offered on October 8, 2011 at 9 AM and 1 PM. Space is limited, so pick-up a flyer and sign-up early. The morning session is full. But there is still room at the afternoon session! Sign up now!

All Life Scouts and their parents should attend this workshop.

November Outings

Creep-o-Ree -- November 4-6, 2011 -- $35 / participant, permission slips due back October 18th

Discovery World & Comedy Sports -- November 12, 2011 -- Includes the Electricity Merit Badge at Discovery World, Dinner, and the Comedy Sports show -- $75 / scout ($35 / others). Forms due back SEPTEMBER 20 (as space is limited).

Leadership Changes

Dean Danner has been appointed the Onatah District Commissioner (subject to approval by the Council Board). As this is a Council position and rather time intensive, Dean will step down as the Scoutmaster effective January 1st. Fred Bomberg will be stepping up as Scoutmaster. Fred was approved by the committee at Sunday’s meeting. Dean will remain with the troop as an Assistant Scoutmaster.

September’s Quiz

In the 1993 film comedy Groundhog Day, what song is playing morning after morning when Bill Murray, as TV newsman Phil Connors, is awakened by a radio alarm clock?
What is the only word in the English language that is shorter in its feminine form than in its masculine form?
What was the first official symbol of the U.S. postal service?

August’s Answers: 1) An earl's wife is a countess; a marquis's wife, a marchioness. 2) Hank Aaron, Willie Mays, and Stan Musial. 3) The naval semaphore signals for "N" and "D" -- shorthand for nuclear disarmament.
